About Mahjong Solitaire
Classic Mahjong Solitaire: match pairs of free, identical tiles to clear the board. Three layouts (Turtle, Fortress and Pyramid), every deal guaranteed solvable, with hints, undo and shuffle when you are stuck.
Mahjong Solitaire runs right in your browser on desktop, tablet and phone: no download, no account, just press Play.
How to play Mahjong Solitaire
- Mahjong Solitaire is a matching game for one player played with 144 mahjong tiles stacked in a layout.
- A tile is free when no tile lies on top of it and its left or right side is open.
- Click or tap two free tiles that match to remove them. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season.
- Clear every tile from the board to win. If no free pairs are left, shuffle the remaining tiles or undo a few moves.
Controls
- Click or tap a free tile, then its match
- H: hint (shows a matching free pair)
- Z or Ctrl+Z: undo (unlimited)
- S: shuffle the remaining tiles
- N: menu with layouts and a new game
Tips and strategy
- Work from the top and the ends of long rows: tiles there free up the most other tiles.
- When three or four of the same tile are free, think before matching; pick the pair that unblocks more tiles.
- Don't clear the easy tiles at the edges first if the middle stack is still tall. Tall stacks are what usually leave you stuck.
- Use undo instead of shuffling when you can: the first three shuffles are free, after that each costs 50 points.
- Match quickly for a combo bonus: matches made within four seconds of each other score extra.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mahjong Solitaire free?+
Yes. Mahjong Solitaire is free to play in the browser with no download, no sign-up and nothing to buy.
Can every game of Mahjong Solitaire be solved?+
Yes. Every deal is built from a winning order of moves, so a solution always exists; a shuffle also keeps the remaining tiles solvable.
Which layouts are there?+
Three: Pyramid (quick, 74 tiles), Fortress (medium, 94 tiles) and the classic Turtle with 144 tiles.
Which tiles match?+
Identical tiles match each other. The exceptions are the flowers and the seasons: any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any other season.
Do I need to read Chinese to play?+
No. Character and wind tiles also show a small number or letter (E, S, W, N) in the corner, so you can match them by that.
What happens when there are no moves left?+
The game tells you and offers to shuffle the remaining tiles, undo your last moves or start a new game.
Can I play Mahjong Solitaire on my phone?+
Yes. On a tall phone screen the layout turns sideways so the tiles are bigger, and you play by tapping.
